WAYANAD: A tragic landslide at an under-construction tunnel project in Kerala’s Wayanad district claimed the lives of two workers and left several others feared trapped beneath mud and debris on Tuesday. The incident occurred near the Meppadi area after continuous monsoon rains destabilised the hillside, triggering a massive collapse at the work site.
The landslide struck without warning while workers were engaged in construction activities inside and around the tunnel project. Thick layers of soil, rocks, and debris buried parts of the site, prompting an immediate emergency response from local authorities, police, fire personnel, and disaster management teams.
Rescue Operation Launched Immediately
Rescue teams rushed to the location soon after receiving information about the collapse. Fire and Rescue Services, police personnel, district administration officials, and local volunteers began searching through the debris in an effort to locate workers who were believed to be trapped.
Heavy earth-moving equipment was brought to the site to remove large quantities of mud and rocks. However, rescue work has been progressing cautiously due to unstable ground conditions and the possibility of additional landslides caused by persistent rainfall.
Several workers were rescued during the initial phase of the operation and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials later confirmed that two workers had lost their lives in the incident, while efforts continued to trace those still missing.

Authorities said relentless rainfall has made rescue operations extremely challenging. Waterlogged soil and loose rocks have increased the risk of further collapses, forcing rescue teams to proceed carefully while clearing debris.
Officials are using excavators along with manual search methods to ensure that trapped workers are located safely. Medical teams and ambulances remain stationed near the site to provide immediate assistance to anyone rescued from the rubble.
District authorities have also restricted movement around the affected area to allow emergency personnel to carry out operations without obstruction.

The accident took place at the Anakkompoyil–Meppadi tunnel project, an important road infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between Wayanad and Malappuram districts.
Once completed, the tunnel is expected to reduce travel time significantly and improve transportation across the hilly region. The project has been considered a key development initiative for boosting connectivity, tourism, and economic activity in northern Kerala.
