NEW DELHI: The southwest monsoon has intensified across large parts of the country, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue fresh alerts for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several states. Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of northern and northeastern India are expected to witness persistent downpours over the coming days, increasing the risk of flooding, waterlogging, landslides and transport disruptions.

Mumbai continues to bear the brunt of the active monsoon, with relentless rainfall flooding roads, slowing traffic and disrupting suburban train and flight operations. The IMD has placed the city under a Red Alert, warning that exceptionally heavy showers may continue. Civic authorities have deployed emergency teams, while residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay updated with official weather advisories.
Low-Pressure System Over the Bay of Bengal Strengthens Monsoon Activity Across India
According to meteorologists, a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified the monsoon circulation. The weather system is expected to sustain widespread rainfall across central, western and eastern India for the next several days, helping improve seasonal rainfall while also increasing the likelihood of weather-related emergencies.
