The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an important advisory for Indian citizens planning to undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through private tour operators after several pilgrims were reportedly stranded in Nepal due to the absence of mandatory Chinese travel permits. The ministry has urged devotees to ensure that all required documents are secured before leaving India to avoid disruption during the pilgrimage.
MEA Warns Against Travelling Without Complete Documentation
According to the MEA, a number of Indian pilgrims sought assistance after reaching Nepal without obtaining the necessary permits and visas required to enter China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. As a result, they were unable to continue their journey to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, leaving them stranded while waiting for travel clearances.
The ministry emphasized that pilgrims should not commence their journey on the assumption that travel permits or visas will be arranged after arriving in Nepal. Officials warned that travelling without confirmed documentation could lead to financial losses, extended delays, and unnecessary hardship.
Tour Operators Must Be Verified Before Booking
In its advisory, the MEA directed all prospective pilgrims to ensure they possess valid passports, Chinese visas, Tibet travel permits, and any other mandatory approvals before departing from India. The ministry also stressed the importance of carefully checking the authenticity and credibility of private tour operators before making bookings.
Around 52 Indian Pilgrims Reportedly Affected
The advisory comes after reports indicated that around 52 Indian pilgrims were stranded in Kathmandu because their travel documentation had not been completed. The incident prompted concerns over the functioning of certain private travel agencies that allegedly failed to arrange the required permits before sending pilgrims on the journey.
The issue also drew political attention, with Member of Parliament Supriya Sule urging the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian diplomatic missions in Nepal and China to extend immediate assistance to the affected Indian citizens.
Government Urges Better Planning for the Sacred Journey
Unlike the government-organised Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, private pilgrimage operators are responsible for ensuring that all travel formalities are completed before the journey begins. Pilgrims opting for private packages must independently verify that all necessary approvals have been obtained well in advance.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimages for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of the Bon faith. Since the pilgrimage route passes through China’s Tibet Autonomous Region, travellers are required to obtain multiple travel permissions in addition to a valid passport.
Officials reiterated that proper planning and complete documentation are essential for a smooth pilgrimage. They advised travellers to avoid relying on verbal assurances from tour operators regarding pending permits and instead insist on receiving all confirmed travel documents before departure.
The MEA said its advisory aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and protect Indian pilgrims from avoidable inconvenience. By verifying tour operators and completing all documentation in advance, devotees can undertake the spiritually significant journey without facing unexpected obstacles during transit.
