HYDERABAD: The legal troubles surrounding Telugu superstar Allu Arjun have deepened after a Hyderabad court summoned the actor in connection with the tragic Sandhya Theatre stampede that occurred during the release of Pushpa 2: The Rule. The development marks another major milestone in a case that has remained under public and judicial scrutiny since December 2024.

According to reports, Hyderabad’s Nampally Court has directed Allu Arjun to appear before it on June 22 as part of proceedings linked to the stampede incident that claimed one life and severely injured a child during a special screening of the blockbuster film at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad.

What Happened At Sandhya Theatre?

The tragedy unfolded on December 4, 2024, when thousands of fans gathered outside Sandhya Theatre near RTC X Roads in Hyderabad for a special screening of Pushpa 2: The Rule. Reports indicate that Allu Arjun’s presence at the venue attracted an unexpectedly massive crowd, resulting in a chaotic surge that eventually turned into a stampede.

During the incident, a woman named Revathi lost her life due to asphyxiation, while her young son suffered serious injuries and required prolonged medical treatment. The tragedy sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over crowd management during celebrity appearances and film premieres.

Why Has The Court Summoned Allu Arjun?

Investigators have named Allu Arjun as Accused No. 11 (A11) in the chargesheet submitted in the case. Authorities are examining whether proper permissions, security protocols and crowd-control arrangements were followed before and during the actor’s visit to the theatre.

The court summons are part of the judicial process following the filing of a detailed chargesheet against multiple individuals, including theatre management officials, security personnel and organisers associated with the event. Reports indicate that 23 individuals have been named in connection with the case.

Investigators are focusing on whether adequate precautions were ignored despite anticipating a massive turnout for the actor’s appearance.

Actor’s Legal Team Reacts

Allu Arjun’s legal representatives have reportedly maintained that the actor complied with authorities whenever required and has been cooperating with the investigation since the beginning of the case. His legal team is expected to present arguments during the upcoming hearing while seeking relief from the allegations levelled against him.

The actor has consistently expressed grief over the tragedy and earlier announced financial support for the affected family while assuring assistance for the treatment of the injured child.

Earlier Arrest And Bail

This is not the first time Allu Arjun has faced legal action in the matter. In December 2024, Hyderabad Police arrested the actor in connection with the stampede case. However, the Telangana High Court granted him interim bail later that day. Administrative delays resulted in him spending a night in jail before being released.

Subsequently, a Hyderabad court granted him regular bail under specific conditions, including cooperation with the ongoing investigation and periodic appearances before authorities whenever necessary.

Over time, some bail conditions were relaxed, including permissions related to overseas travel, though the actor remained obligated to participate in the investigation whenever summoned.

Impact Beyond The Courtroom

The Sandhya Theatre tragedy has triggered a wider debate across the Indian film industry regarding celebrity appearances at theatres and fan management protocols. Experts have called for stricter regulations, improved coordination between event organisers and police, and enhanced emergency preparedness at entertainment venues.

The case has also become a cautionary example of how inadequate crowd control can transform celebratory events into life-threatening situations.

With the Nampally Court now actively proceeding with hearings, the upcoming legal developments could significantly influence accountability standards for high-profile public events in India.
