NEW DELHI: India has reached a significant milestone in its journey towards becoming a global defence manufacturing powerhouse. The country’s annual defence production surged to an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore in the financial year 2025-26, marking a 15.6 per cent increase over the previous fiscal year and more than doubling in just five years.
The achievement is being seen as a major success for the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative, which has focused on reducing India’s dependence on imported military equipment and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities.
According to official data, defence production stood at ₹1.54 lakh crore in FY2024-25 before rising to ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY2025-26. Compared to FY2020-21, when production was ₹84,643 crore, the latest figure represents a growth of nearly 110 per cent. Indigenous defence production has also nearly quadrupled since FY2013-14.
