Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held high-level discussions in Tokyo with senior executives of leading Japanese financial institutions, seeking to deepen long-term investment ties and attract greater Japanese institutional capital into India’s rapidly expanding economy.

The meeting brought together representatives from MUFG, Development Bank of Japan (DBJ), Mizuho, Morgan Stanley, Nomura and Nippon Life. Talks centred on India’s economic outlook, emerging investment opportunities, regulatory reforms and measures aimed at making it easier for Japanese investors to participate in India’s long-term growth story.

India Targets $30 Trillion Economy by 2047

Goyal highlighted the resilience of the Indian economy amid global uncertainties, pointing to 7.7 per cent economic growth recorded last year. He said India is working towards becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047, with a strong banking sector, healthy capital adequacy, lower non-performing assets and a rapidly expanding consumer base supporting sustained growth.

The minister also pointed to rising disposable incomes and the expansion of India’s middle class as important factors likely to drive investment and domestic demand in the coming decades.

Japan Sees Major Opportunities in India’s New Economy

During the discussions, Goyal identified several sectors with significant potential for Japanese investors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres, renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure.

He emphasised that India’s growing renewable energy capacity and nationwide power grid are creating favourable conditions for energy-intensive industries, particularly data centres and other digital businesses.

The India Semiconductor Mission, he added, is opening new opportunities across semiconductor manufacturing, technology and associated supply chains, providing Japanese companies with avenues to expand their presence in India.

Japanese Financial Giants Express Strong Confidence

The participating Japanese institutions outlined their expanding engagement with India and expressed optimism about the country’s long-term economic prospects.

MUFG highlighted its investment of approximately $4 billion in Shriram Finance, along with growing interests in renewable energy and hydrogen. DBJ discussed its dedicated India strategy and identified property development, venture capital and other long-term investments as areas of growing interest.

Mizuho pointed to improving profitability among Japanese companies operating in India and highlighted the expansion of its Indian operations, including its Global Capability Centre in Pune.

Morgan Stanley described India as one of its most important locations globally. The financial services giant has more than 19,000 employees in the country and is increasingly expanding into higher-value capital markets and financial services activities.

Nomura highlighted its long-standing presence in India and its role in connecting Japanese businesses and global industries with Indian opportunities. Its technology capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity were also discussed.

Nippon Life stressed the importance of long-term “patient capital” and highlighted the strong returns generated through its Indian operations.

Focus on Easier Investment and Capital Flows

The meeting also addressed practical challenges affecting Japanese institutional investment in India. Participants discussed simplifying profit-repatriation procedures, improving access to Indian capital markets and providing greater regulatory predictability for long-term investors.

Japanese institutions maintained that their strategic outlook for India remains strongly positive, while acknowledging that currency fluctuations and regulatory considerations can influence short-term investment decisions.

Goyal welcomed the feedback and reiterated the government’s commitment to continuously improving the ease of doing business and creating a more seamless environment for international investors.

GIFT City Emerging as Investment Gateway

The potential of GIFT City was another important area of discussion. The international financial hub could play a greater role in channeling overseas capital into India and facilitating cross-border investment between India and Japan.

Goyal emphasised that India is looking beyond conventional capital inflows. The government wants long-term partnerships that also bring advanced technology, innovation, manufacturing capabilities, employment opportunities and stronger integration with global value chains.

He said investment opportunities exist not only in emerging industries but also in established businesses seeking technological upgrades and modernisation.

India-Japan Investment Target Gains Importance

The discussions assume particular significance against the backdrop of the India-Japan objective of mobilising 10 trillion yen in Japanese private investment into India over the next decade.

The latest engagement underlined the strategic depth of the bilateral economic relationship and the growing interest among Japanese financial institutions in India’s long-term growth potential.

The meeting also reinforced India’s efforts to position itself as a major global manufacturing, technology and investment hub while strengthening its economic partnership with Japan.

With opportunities expanding across digital infrastructure, clean energy, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing and financial services, both sides have significant scope to deepen investment and technology cooperation.

Goyal’s Tokyo engagement therefore marks another important step in India’s efforts to attract stable, long-term Japanese capital and build stronger economic linkages as the country advances towards its ambitious 2047 development vision.
