NEW DELHI: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather advisory warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall across Gujarat and Maharashtra, as an active southwest monsoon system strengthens over western India. While these states are expected to experience widespread downpours over the next few days, Delhi is likely to see only light to moderate rainfall with no signs of prolonged heavy showers.
According to the latest forecast, the active monsoon conditions are being driven by favourable atmospheric circulation and abundant moisture from the Arabian Sea. The weather system is expected to bring intense rainfall to several districts in Gujarat and Maharashtra, raising concerns over localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to transport and daily life.
Gujarat Braces for Extremely Heavy Rainfall
Gujarat remains one of the most vulnerable states in the latest IMD forecast. Several districts are expected to receive heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, particularly in Saurashtra, Kutch, and parts of south Gujarat. Meteorologists have warned that continuous rainfall may cause rivers and reservoirs to swell, increasing the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas.
Urban centres could witness severe waterlogging, traffic congestion, and temporary disruption of public services. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to stay updated with official weather bulletins.
Local administrations have been directed to remain alert and keep disaster response teams prepared for any emergencies arising from heavy rain.
Maharashtra Likely to Witness Persistent Downpours
Maharashtra is also expected to experience an active spell of monsoon rainfall, particularly in Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan, and adjoining regions. Heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds are forecast over several districts.
The Konkan coast, including Mumbai and neighbouring regions, may continue to receive frequent rainfall due to strong moisture inflow from the Arabian Sea. Hilly regions are also at risk of landslides, while low-lying urban areas may experience waterlogging during peak rainfall hours.
Authorities have advised commuters to exercise caution, especially in flood-prone areas and regions vulnerable to landslides.
Central India to Receive Widespread Monsoon Showers
Apart from Gujarat and Maharashtra, parts of central India are expected to witness moderate to heavy rainfall. States including Madhya Pradesh may receive scattered heavy showers that could improve water availability for agriculture.
The rainfall is likely to benefit kharif crops by improving soil moisture and replenishing reservoirs. However, excessive rainfall in a short period may also damage standing crops and temporarily disrupt farming operations in affected districts.
Agricultural experts have advised farmers to monitor local weather updates before carrying out field activities.
Delhi to Receive Only Limited Rainfall
Unlike western India, Delhi is expected to remain under relatively subdued monsoon conditions. The IMD has predicted generally cloudy skies with occasional light to moderate rain and isolated thunderstorms over the coming days.
Although intermittent showers may provide temporary relief from humid weather, the capital is not expected to receive widespread heavy rainfall similar to Gujarat and Maharashtra. Humidity levels are likely to remain high, making weather conditions uncomfortable despite occasional rain.
Traffic congestion and localized waterlogging may occur during brief spells of rain, but widespread flooding is not anticipated.
Southern India to Experience Weak Monsoon Activity
The IMD has also indicated that monsoon activity across much of southern India is expected to remain weaker than normal during this period. States such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana are likely to receive only isolated light to moderate rainfall.

The temporary weakening of monsoon activity over the southern peninsula contrasts sharply with the active weather systems affecting western and central India.
Meteorologists believe the rainfall pattern could change later depending on the movement of monsoon systems over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.
Authorities Issue Precautionary Measures
State disaster management authorities have urged residents in rain-affected regions to remain vigilant. Heavy rainfall can result in flash floods, overflowing drains, landslides in hilly terrain, and disruption of transport services.
People living near rivers and low-lying areas have been advised to follow evacuation instructions if required. Motorists are being encouraged to avoid driving through waterlogged roads, while fishermen have been asked to follow weather advisories before venturing into the sea.
Emergency teams remain on standby across vulnerable districts to respond quickly in case of weather-related incidents.
Rainfall Expected to Support Agriculture
The fresh spell of rainfall is expected to support the ongoing kharif cropping season across several parts of western and central India. Crops such as paddy, soybean, cotton, pulses, and maize are likely to benefit from improved soil moisture.
However, agricultural experts have cautioned that excessive rainfall over short periods could damage crops, delay harvesting in some regions, and affect rural infrastructure.
The IMD continues to closely monitor the evolving weather systems and has said updated forecasts and warnings will be issued as conditions change. Residents are advised to stay informed through official weather bulletins and follow safety instructions issued by local authorities during periods of heavy rainfall.
