At least four people lost their lives while hundreds of residents were evacuated after relentless overnight rainfall triggered flash floods across parts of Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in the districts of Rajouri and Poonch. The intense downpour caused rivers and seasonal streams to overflow, inundating residential areas, sweeping away vehicles and damaging public infrastructure.
The worst-affected regions witnessed rapidly rising water levels during the early hours of Sunday, leaving many families with little time to save their belongings before escaping to safer locations. Emergency teams, police personnel and local volunteers launched rescue operations as floodwaters entered homes, markets and public buildings.
Authorities said the situation remains under close watch as intermittent rainfall continues across several parts of the Union Territory.
Four killed in Poonch as floods strike villages
The four fatalities were reported from Poonch district, where heavy rainfall caused sudden flash floods in multiple villages. Officials said the victims were caught in fast-moving floodwaters after streams overflowed due to continuous rain.
Rescue teams have been searching affected areas to ensure no residents remain stranded. Local authorities expressed concern that additional rainfall could increase the risk of further flooding and landslides in vulnerable regions.
Officials have appealed to residents living near rivers, nullahs and hill slopes to remain alert and follow evacuation advisories issued by the district administration.
Rajouri witnesses large-scale evacuations
Although no deaths were immediately reported from Rajouri, the district experienced widespread flooding that forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents. Low-lying neighbourhoods, including areas around the new bus stand, were submerged after water from overflowing streams entered residential colonies.
Families were shifted to safer locations as floodwaters rapidly surrounded homes. Rescue personnel used boats and emergency vehicles to move elderly residents, women and children away from danger.
District officials established temporary shelters for displaced families while ensuring food, drinking water and other essential supplies reached those affected.
Vehicles swept away, roads submerged
The powerful flash floods caused extensive damage to public and private property across Rajouri and Poonch. Several parked vehicles were swept away by the strong current, while others remained partially submerged in muddy floodwaters.
Major roads were blocked by debris, fallen trees and overflowing drains, disrupting transportation and delaying emergency response efforts. In several places, traffic movement came to a complete halt as water levels continued rising.
Officials have begun assessing the damage to roads, bridges, power infrastructure and residential buildings. Restoration work is expected to continue once weather conditions improve.
Rescue teams work round the clock
The district administration, police, disaster response teams and local volunteers have been working continuously to rescue stranded residents and provide immediate assistance.
