The Uttarakhand Police have arrested Pramod Nautiyal, a suspended employee of the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC), in connection with the alleged theft and misappropriation of devotees’ donations at the Badrinath Dham temple. The arrest marks a significant development in an investigation that has drawn widespread public attention and prompted both administrative and government-level action.
Arrest Follows Days of Investigation
According to police officials, Pramod Nautiyal was taken into custody from his residence after investigators gathered evidence linking him to alleged irregularities in the handling of temple offerings. Nautiyal had already been suspended from his duties by the BKTC after a preliminary inquiry found prima facie evidence suggesting misconduct in the counting and management of donations made by devotees at the revered Himalayan shrine.
The arrest comes days after an FIR was registered against Nautiyal following allegations that cash, gold and silver coins, and other valuable offerings entrusted to the temple administration were improperly handled. Authorities have stated that the investigation remains active and additional evidence is being examined.
CCTV Footage Became a Key Piece of Evidence
Investigators have relied heavily on CCTV footage collected from the donation counting area inside the temple premises. According to officials, the footage allegedly shows the accused repeatedly moving between the donation counting room and his office during the counting process.
Police claim the recordings indicate suspicious movements involving bundles of currency notes, gold and silver coins, Shaligram stones and sealed envelopes believed to contain cash offerings from devotees. The footage has become a crucial part of the investigation and is being examined alongside witness statements and financial records.
Authorities have not disclosed the total value of the alleged misappropriated donations, saying a detailed audit is still underway.
Temple Committee Initiated Internal Action
The Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee acted soon after allegations surfaced by suspending Nautiyal and constituting an internal inquiry committee. The committee’s preliminary findings reportedly indicated sufficient grounds to proceed with disciplinary action.
BKTC officials have maintained that the institution is committed to transparency and accountability in managing donations received from millions of pilgrims visiting Badrinath each year. They have assured devotees that strict measures are being implemented to strengthen monitoring of donation handling and counting procedures.
State Government Orders Independent Probe
The controversy also prompted the Uttarakhand government to intervene. Dissatisfied with relying solely on the temple committee’s internal inquiry, the government constituted a high-level three-member committee to independently investigate the alleged financial irregularities.
The panel has been tasked with examining the entire donation management process, reviewing administrative procedures and identifying whether any other officials or employees were involved. Officials say the independent investigation is intended to restore public confidence in the administration of one of India’s most important pilgrimage centres.
Police Continue Wider Investigation
Police officials have indicated that the arrest of Nautiyal may not be the final step in the investigation. They are analysing financial records, CCTV footage, employee statements and donation registers to determine whether the alleged irregularities involved more than one individual.
Investigators are also examining the security arrangements surrounding the donation counting process and whether existing safeguards were adequate to prevent misuse of offerings made by devotees.

Accused Had Challenged Suspension
Before his arrest, Nautiyal had approached the Uttarakhand High Court challenging both his suspension from the temple committee and the FIR registered against him. The legal proceedings are expected to continue alongside the criminal investigation.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have reiterated that the arrest was carried out after collecting sufficient material during the probe and in accordance with legal procedures.

Badrinath Dham is one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites and forms part of the Char Dham Yatra. Every year, lakhs of devotees visit the temple and make monetary as well as precious metal offerings. The temple is administered by the Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee under the provisions of the relevant state legislation.
Given the religious significance of the shrine and the large volume of donations it receives annually, the alleged irregularities have attracted considerable public concern and demands for greater transparency in temple administration.
